Description
Zahtar (also Zatar, Satar or Za`atar) is a wonderful, versatile and flavourful spice mix from the Middle East which is traditionally mixed with olive oil and spread on pita bread before it is baked. It consists of toasted sesame seeds, sumac, salt and oregano or hyssop and/or thyme and has a nutty, flavourful taste.
The mix tastes fantastic as a starter on an oriental menu. It is served with bread (pita bread, baguette etc.) which is first dipped in olive oil and then in the herb mix. Very simple, and incredibly delicious!
Zahtar is also suitable for adding to mince dishes, sauces, rice and vegetable dishes, dips, salad dressings and as a marinade for grilled meat.
Shelf Life / Storage
Spices lose some of their flavour through incorrect storage. Spices should be stored in a cool, dry, dark and airtight place.
